Many activities in both research and teaching laboratories at the university generate waste that is regulated by the United States Environmental Protection Agency and/or the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. Hazardous materials are substances, which have hazardous characteristics. Characteristics can be flammable, corrosive, reactive, toxic, poisonous, carcinogenic, radioactive, and biohazardous. Wastes that contain these materials are considered to be hazardous because they present a potential risk to human health and/or the environment.
Hazardous waste must be properly packaged, labeled, and segregated. Packaging should consist of an approved container, which is compatible with the waste it contains.
