Many of the university laboratories generate used oil from research activities. This material is regulated as Used Oil and must be managed appropriately, to protect the environment. The following provides guidelines for proper storage and disposal of used oils.

Vacuum Pump Oils, Hydraulic Oils & Lubricating Oils
Used oil is a regulated material and must collected in a container, which is labeled with Rutgers "Used Oil" label, unless it is being collected in the original container, then the words "Used Oil" can be written on the original manufacturers label. The container must be kept closed unless used oil is being added and should be stored in secondary containment. These waste materials are picked-up by REHS. Use the link below for requesting a pick-up of used oil. (Vegetable Oils, which are generated in research laboratories, are managed according to these same guidelines.)

Used Oil Contaminated Debris
Used oil contaminated debris must be collected, stored and labeled as identified above for used oil. Secondary containment is only necessary if there is free liquid present in the container. Used Oil Contaminated with Hazardous Materials
Used oils that are contaminated with hazardous materials (i.e. solvents, heavy metals, etc.) must be managed as hazardous waste. Please see the Hazardous Waste Disposal Policy/Procedure for specific information on managing hazardous wastes.

Disposal of Equipment with Large Oil Reservoirs (>5gallon)
Many large pieces of laboratory equipment such as, Electron Microscopes, X-ray Generating Devices and Medical X-ray Units have large oil reservoirs (>5 gallon). REHS must be contacted at (732) 445-2550, prior to removing used oil from these types of equipment. If applicable, REHS will arrange to sample and test the oil for PCB's, which will ensure proper handling and disposal of the used oil
