What is required?

Master University list of all equipment containing 50 lbs or more refrigerant

REHS maintains a list of all equipment containing 50 lbs or more of refrigerant. If you add or remove equipment, please contact REHS so that the list can be updated. The information needed is as follows:

  • Location of equipment
  • Manufacturer
  • Serial Number
  • Model Number
  • Date of Manufacture
  • Cooling Capacity (Tons)
  • Type of Refrigerant
  • Amount of Refrigerant required (Lbs)
  • Initial Refrigerant charge (as delivered)

Means to recover refrigerant during maintenance

  • Refrigerant must be removed from equipment prior to servicing
  • Refrigerant recover / recycling equipment must be certified and registered with USEPA. If you purchase any new refrigerant recovery / recycling equipment, please contact REHS so that the USEPA certification can be submitted.

Maintenance records must be kept for all equipment containing 50 lbs or more of refrigerant

  • Records must include a description of service performed and the amount of refrigerant added
  • Maintenance records, including amounts of refrigerant added, must be kept for 3 years

Refrigerant leaks on equipment containing 50 lbs or more must be repaired within 30 days.

  • Any refrigerant leaks that would result in a loss of 35% of the normal charge within a one-year period, must be repaired within 30 days, or the equipment must be removed from service and the remaining refrigerant removed, until the leak is repaired.

Removal of refrigerant containing equipment requires refrigerant to be evacuated, recycled and documented


Personnel involved with the maintenance of refrigeration equipment are required to be certified.

  • Copies of employees' certification must be kept on site.

Records must be kept on all refrigerant purchases and usage

  • An inventory of each cylinder must be kept, listing where the refrigerant is used and the amount used, so that when the cylinder is empty all of the refrigerant can be accounted for.
  • All records of refrigerant use must be kept for 3 years
