In general, the following uses of radioactive material and/or radiation require the use of a monitoring badge:

  • Radioiodination protocols using I-125
  • The use of gamma emitters other than I-125
  • Cell labeling experiments using greater than 1 mCi P-32 per experiment
  • The use of X-ray producing devices (excluding electron microscopes)
  • Declared pregnant workers (Fetal Dosimetry Program)

The NJDEP requires the use of individual monitoring devices by "Any individual who is likely to receive a dose in excess of 25 mrem in any period of seven consecutive days." Approximately 95% of the individuals who are issued badges at Rutgers do not receive a measurable dose.

The monitoring badges that are issued at Rutgers University are not capable of monitoring external radiation exposures from the following isotopes: H-3, C-14, S-35.

If you would like a badge, but do not meet the criteria above, one will be provided to you after REHS receives an internal purchase order from your department for the cost of the badge(s). The cost of a whole body badge is $3.24 per quarter, while a ring badge is $2.90 per quarter.
