Scaffolding can be used in many different applications at Rutgers. Scaffolding is typically associated with exterior or interior construction and renovation work but is also used in other applications such as in theater productions. Rutgers employees who erect, use, or disassemble scaffolding are expected to follow OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1926 Subpart L. Please contact REHS if you have any scaffolding questions.

Outside Contractors

Outside contractors are expected to follow OSHA regulation 29 CFR 1926 Subpart L and have a written program and training that meets all requirements. REHS may require outside contractors to submit all written programs and training records.

Common problems associated with scaffolding:

  • Footings are not firmly anchored to the ground
  • Access to the top is not provided, must have a ladder or other form of safe access
  • Exits and walkways are not provided with overhead protection
  • Guardrails (toprails, midrails, and toeboards) are not present or properly installed
