REHS has prepared these guidelines to assist you if you are planning on moving your laboratory chemicals to a new location. Certain precautions must be followed to ensure that the chemicals are moved safely in accordance with applicable regulations.
The following are the typical relocation scenarios:
- Relocation to another laboratory within the same building
- Relocation to another laboratory in a different building within Rutgers University
- Relocation outside Rutgers University campuses
REHS offers the following guidelines to assist you during your laboratory move.
Relocation to another laboratory within the same building:
If the move is within the same building, lab personnel may move the chemicals themselves. Lab personnel are required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (safety glasses, lab coat, gloves), use appropriate mechanical aids (cart), and have spill clean-up materials readily available in the event of a spill. Please contact REHS if you require assistance or when moving particularly hazardous materials or compressed gasses to ensure the items are properly relocated, and the new space is appropriate for these materials.
Relocation to another laboratory in a different building within Rutgers University:
When possible, REHS can provide limited chemical transportation services for laboratory chemical relocations from one lab to another within the university at no cost. However, depending on the scope and timeframe for the relocation, an outside vendor may be utilized, and the researcher or department will be responsible for the cost. Please contact REHS as soon as possible to ensure the move can be adequately planned. You cannot move laboratory chemicals, biohazardous materials, or radioactive materials in your personal or company vehicle.
When the work is performed by REHS, a date will be scheduled for the move. REHS will come to your lab on the scheduled date and properly package, label, and transport your chemicals to your new lab. REHS will unpack the chemicals and assist with placing the chemicals in storage.
When a contractor performs the work, REHS can provide recommendations for a vendor to provide these services. REHS will participate in the initial meeting with the vendor and the laboratory contact person. Once the move is scheduled, the laboratory contact person will be responsible to supervise the vendor’s work. The researcher or department will be responsible for the costs associated with the chemical move. If you choose to use another vendor (one not recommended by REHS), the vendor must have the appropriate training, licensing, and registrations as required by the DOT
Relocation outside Rutgers University campuses
The Department Chairman must be consulted whenever a researcher plans to relocate chemicals from a Rutgers laboratory to a laboratory outside Rutgers University. A contractor will be utilized for this service (as described above) after approval by the Department Chairman. The researcher or department will be responsible for the costs associated with the chemical move. Version 1 – 5/26/06
