Rutgers University Student Commuter Rewards Program

The Student Commuter Rewards Program is a green initiative that promotes Rutgers University–Newark students to use mass transportation to get to and from classes. By submitting transit receipts, students can receive up to $50 per month in gift card rewards at kite+key, Rutgers Tech Store or Barnes & Noble. The program is an alternative solution to the limited amount of parking available on the Newark campus.

NJ Transit Commuting Options

The City of Newark is served by several different transit options offered by NJ Transit.

There are two NJ Transit train stations near campus and the Rutgers University—Newark Campus Buses stop at both stations. Broad Street Station is served by three NJ Transit commuter rail lines: the Gladstone Branch, the Montclair-Boonton Line, and the Morris & Essex Line. Newark Penn Station is a major hub serviced by three commuter rail lines: the Raritan Valley Line, the North Jersey Coast Line, and the Northeast Corridor. Amtrak and the PATH train also stop at Newark Penn Station. You can purchase tickets or passes through the NJ Transit mobile app, at the stations, or in cash on board the train.

NJ Transit provides an extensive bus network to Newark including stops at major transit hubs in the city like Newark Penn Station and Broad Street Station as well as nearby cities such as Harrison and Kearny. Real-time bus tracking can be found within the MyBus section of the NJ Transit Mobile App. You can purchase single ride tickets or monthly passes through the NJ Transit Mobile app, or pay in cash when you board.

Newark Light Rail

Newark Light Rail is another great option to connect to campus from Broad Street Station and Newark Penn Station. The Newark Light Rail also serves the University Heights, Upper Roseville, and Forest Hills neighborhoods In Newark as well as parts of nearby Bloomfield. The Washington Park and Washington Street stations are both located near campus. Tickets and passes can be purchased on the NJ Transit mobile app or at the station

NJ Transit Student Discount

NJ TRANSIT has a partnership with Rutgers University to offer a 25% discount on rail, bus, and light rail monthly passes. Eligible full-time and part-time undergraduate and graduate students can purchase their passes online. Students must be enrolled in at least two courses to be eligible for the discount.

NJ Transit is also offering a "Buy 3 Months, Get 1 Month Free" promotion on student passes for Spring 2023.

E-Bikes and E-Scooters
