Obtain a Virtual Parking Permit

Rutgers uses license plate recognition (LPR). You will not receive a hang tag or sticker. The E-Permit system eliminates the need for hangtags and paper tickets, aligns with our commitment to the environment, and provides you with a convenient, paperless, self-managed parking pass system. You are still required to follow our rules and regulations. Any citation that result from parking violations are emailed to you.

Can I add multiple vehicles to my parking permit?

Yes, you can add multiple vehicles to your permit. However, only one vehicle can be parked on campus at a time. If more than one vehicle is parking on campus this will result in a Fraudulent Use citation being issued to each vehicle.

Where can I park?

Faculty/staff may only park in lots designated for faculty/staff: ipo.rutgers.edu/parking/permits/faculty-staff

Please make sure that your plate is facing the driving aisle at all times. If your state does not have a front plate, then you cannot back into a parking stall.

I just purchased a new vehicle with temporary tags. Do I need to register it?

Yes, please register any new vehicle, even with temporary tags, that you will be parking on campus. Temporary tags must be registered as a license plate number, not a VIN number.

Once the permanent plates are received, revisit your parking portal account and add your new plates. Make sure your license plate is entered correctly; one letter or number off will result in a virtual ticket.

Please make sure to include the state the plate was issued from.

I have state handicap accessibility. What if there are no accessible parking spaces available?

Parking in handicapped stalls requires you to have a valid parking permit, register your permanent or temporary disabled placard/tag with DOTs and then display of proper identification from Motor Vehicles Services at all times. Once accessible parking permission is added to the parking permit, Faculty, Staff, Student and Visitors can park in any parking stall in any Rutgers parking lot or deck provided if it is not a reserved stall or a guaranteed stall.

I see a lot of reserved spaces available, am I able to park there?

No. Reserved spaces are designated for specific individuals within the university.

I received a virtual ticket and I do not believe I deserved it. How do I dispute it?

You can appeal your virtual/electronic ticket/citation from your parking portal account. Visit go.rutgers.edu/parking and log in to your parking portal account with your NetID and password.

Appeals are reviewed in the order they are received. Processing times may vary. An email notice will be sent when an appeal is processed and adjudicated.

Citations will be upheld if any of the following reasons are the basis for the appeal:

  • Couldn't find a legal parking space.
  • Didn't know policies or regulations.
  • Didn't see posted restrictions.
  • Couldn't find a convenient parking space.
  • Had four-way flashers on (emergency flashers).
  • Didn't have enough time to park properly.
How can I pay for my virtual ticket?

You may pay your virtual ticket online through the parking website by credit or debit.

I have a rental vehicle, what do I do about parking?

You must go to the portal and register the license plate

  • Click the “+ Add” button in the vehicles section.
  • Once in the “Add Vehicle” screen, click Rental Vehicle and enter a rental end date.
  • Click Save when you are done. The rental vehicle will automatically be dropped from your permit on the rental end date.

Alternatively you can leave the rental end date blank; but, in that case you must remember to manually remove the rental vehicle from your permit.

Do I need to purchase a permit if I only plan to park on campus at night and on the weekends?

Yes. Any vehicle parking on university property must purchase a permit.
