Student Parking Permits

Rutgers University campus life can place students in multiple campus locations. Everyone who parks at any of the Rutgers campuses is required to have a valid parking permit.

New to Driving at Rutgers?

We understand the challenges and anxiety of simply attending and being prepared for class. With that understanding in mind, Rutgers Parking Services is committed to providing as much guidance as possible.

What is the student parking program?

Students can only have one parking permit type per semester. Each type has assigned parking locations at designated times during peak and off-peak period. Students who are commuting to campus (not living on campus) can select a Commuter campus permit.

Resident permits are allocated according to the housing assignment of a Resident student (assigned campus housing). The resident permit allows 24-hour parking in designated parking locations of the permit which may be in another campus, other than the campus of the resident housing assignment.

Permit inventories are limited per semester and can be availed on a first come, first serve basis. Students who occasionally drive to campus have the daily permit option to park for the day.

Select the campus below to view the parking locations assigned to each permit type. Permits are sold from the student parking portal and registration of vehicle information is stored.

Permit Exchanges

Change in Housing Status

If a student with a valid Resident Parking Permit cancels housing, they must notify DOTS. Resident students that change housing assignment to a different campus must notify DOTS to update their parking assignment. Students with valid Commuter parking permits that move into campus housing must notify DOTS in exchange for a Resident permit.

New Brunswick Commuter Zone Change

Permit exchanges cannot be processed if parking account has open citations or an unpaid outstanding balance.

Night Commuter Exchange

Students with valid Night Commuter parking permits may exchange for another Commuter parking permit pending availability.

Additional Parking

Additional Parking

Accessible parking privileges are available upon request but will be reviewed for consideration by the department. Submitted forms do not guarantee approval and a valid parking permit is required to file the request. Additional Parking request is examined on a case-by-case basis. If approved, a $30 additional fee will be charged for the additional parking access.

Complete Additional Parking Request form. Explain why, where, and when you need additional parking. Back-to-back classes will not be accepted as a reason for additional parking. Employment will not be accepted as a reason for additional parking. Night commuter parking permissions are not eligible for additional parking.

Additional Parking for Medical Needs

Students who require accessible parking, temporary or permanent, to park in university parking areas must obtain a valid Rutgers Virtual Parking Permit. Request for medical needs also require the treating physician to submit a Certification of Medical Needs form. The Certification of Medical Needs form will be reviewed by one of the university doctors. Both forms must be filled out completely and once the forms are reviewed and approved by the university doctor, we will notify the student by email.
