Maintaining ADA compliance is challenging for a university with many older buildings. Rutgers created the Facilities Access Council in 2014 to assess needs, prioritize upgrades, and address accessibility concerns reported across campuses. Historic buildings add complexity because changes may require state preservation approval. Projects range from low-cost fixes like signage and door activators to major upgrades such as ramps, elevators, and accessible restrooms. In 2021, $10 million was allocated for accessibility improvements, and the Council continues to oversee progress as funding allows.
