Students must have an active role and be registered in official University schools and degree programs to be eligible to receive an RU ID. Additionally, you must have activated your NetID and uploaded your photo online. Those with multiple roles will receive an RU ID that indicates their primary relationship with the University based on the following hierarchy (employees, students, and guests). Do not alter or punch holes in your RU ID.

Online Photo Submission

You must upload your photo online for your RU ID.  This can be done via your enrollment pathway.  If your school/program does not use the enrollment pathway, please visit Online Photo Submission to upload your photo.

Photo requirements, restrictions, and an online photo submission tutorial can be viewed here. You will receive an email confirmation of your photo’s approval status (approved or denied). Please check your official Rutgers email account, your personal email account, and your Spam/Junk folders. If your photo does not meet the requirements, please upload a new photo that does.

New Students

Most new students (including transfers) will receive their RU ID at their new student orientation. You must upload your photo online 10 days prior to orientation.

If your school/program is not holding an orientation, you are not attending orientation, or you were previously issued an RU ID, you need to visit an ID Card Service Center to obtain your RU ID.

Fully Online Students

Fully online students earning their degree through a fully online program are eligible for a digital RU ID to use as proof of being a Rutgers University student.  As with the physical RU ID, you must upload your photo online using the Online Photo Submission process.

The digital RU ID is a replica of your physical RU ID, but does not replace your physical RU ID or the policy of having your physical RU ID on you while on campus, nor is it valid for University services such as building access, meal plans, recreation centers, libraries, etc.

You may access your digital RU ID by logging into your myRutgers portal via a desktop computer or mobile device.  Via the web, navigate to the settings gear on the left side menu and then click on your photo. Via the mobile app, navigate to the settings gear on the upper right menu and then click “Profile-ID Card and Logout”.

The mobile application can be downloaded from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store

Fully online students who wish to request a physical RU ID, please fill out the form.

Fees

There is no fee for your first RU ID.  All replacement RU IDs are subject to a $20.00 replacement card fee per University Policy, 30.1.10.

Replacement Student RU ID

To replace a lost/stolen RU ID, please visit an ID Card Service Center.

Once a replacement RU ID has been issued, your previous RU ID is permanently suspended and it cannot be reactivated for any reason.

If you had building access permissions on your RU ID, those permissions will transfer to your new RU ID within 30 minutes of the new RU ID being printed.

Updating your RU ID

If you have a name change, role change, normal wear and tear, or an older technology RU ID, you may exchange it for a new RU ID. Please bring your current RU ID to an ID Card Service Center to exchange it. If your RU ID was issued prior to March 5, 2018, we strongly encourage you to upgrade it to the newest technology RU ID.

If you change schools/programs/campuses, and your primary role remains student, you do not need to obtain a new RU ID.
