Student Address Format

All items sent to students residing on the New Brunswick campus must be completely and correctly addressed with:

the recipient’s complete name as listed in the Rutgers Mail Services files, and the recipient’s complete, and correct 4 digit campus Post Office address as listed in the Rutgers Mail Services files.

Here are examples of what your address should look like:

Your address is a combination of part of your RU ID number and the name of the campus where you reside. In the example above, the #### would be the last 4 digits of your RU ID number along with the campus designator where you reside.

  • Busch Campus: BPO Way
  • College Ave Campus: RPO Way

Along with the correct last for RU ID digits and campus designator, the proper city, state, and zip code must always also be included on all incoming mail/ packages.

Important: Students should not use their dorm name, room number, or dorm location when addressing letters or packages. This could result in processing and delivery delays or items returned to the sender.

Misaddressed Items

Incoming items with errant addressing such as incorrect/unlisted recipient name, incomplete recipient name (missing first or last name), missing recipient name, incorrect campus address, incomplete campus address, physical dorm information, and/or incorrect municipality or zip code will result in the item being subject to investigation and/or correction by supervisory personnel and subsequent delay in delivery or return to sender.

Expired Items

Items delivered to the locker banks are eligible for and subject to expiration and removal from the locker banks after 72 hours.

Expired items removed from the locker banks are held for pick up from the campus service window during service window hours. A photo ID is required for the recipient to pick their item up from the service window.

When an expired item is held for pickup from the service window, the recipient will have 30 days to pick it up before it is subject to return to sender.

Items to be returned to sender include:

  • Items arriving by private carrier (UPS, FEDEX, DHL, Amazon, etc) addressed to recipient names not listed in the Housing file.
  • Expired items not collected within the 30 day holding time that are private carrier items or are for a recipient with no forwarding address on file.
  • Errantly addressed items whose intended recipient is not determined within the 30-day holding time.
Mail Forwarding

Items to be forwarded include:

  • Items arriving by USPS (United States Postal Service) addressed to recipient names not listed in the Housing file but have a home/forwarding address on file.

Oversized Items

Items that cannot fit into a locker are held for pick up at the service window.

Items or shipments with a weight total over 70 lbs. and/or a girth over 108” will be held at the receiving facilities for pickup.

Students will receive an email notifying them of the pickup location and other information necessary to obtain their items.

Open/Damaged Packages

Items arriving with packaging in open or damaged/compromised condition cannot be delivered to the locker banks and are placed in a clear plastic bag and labeled as open/damaged packages with a sticker advising of the item’s condition and relinquishing Rutgers Mail Services of any liability.

Items with any substance leaking from the package cannot leave the receiving facility.
